Custom Fitted Mouthguards 1, The Smile Collective

A well-made mouthguard plays an important role in protecting the teeth, soft tissues, and jaws during physical activities. Unlike over-the-counter options, a professionally fitted mouthguard is tailored to the individual, providing comfort, stability, and a higher level of protection.

Why Mouthguards Are Important

Mouthguards are protective devices worn over the teeth to absorb and distribute impact forces. They are most often used during contact sports such as football, basketball, rugby, hockey, or martial arts. However, they are also helpful for activities with a risk of falls or collisions, including skateboarding and cycling.

Without a mouthguard, trauma can lead to chipped, broken, or knocked-out teeth, as well as injury to lips, cheeks, and gums. Jaw injuries may also occur. A mouthguard reduces the likelihood and severity of such damage by acting as a barrier and shock absorber.

Types of Mouthguards

Stock Mouthguards These are pre-formed and ready to wear. They are inexpensive but offer limited fit and protection. Because they are not customised, they may feel bulky and restrict breathing or speech.

Boil-and-Bite Mouthguards Available from pharmacies and sports stores, these are softened in hot water, then moulded to the teeth. They provide a better fit than stock versions but are often less accurate and less durable than professional mouthguards.

Custom-Fitted Mouthguards Created by a dentist, these are moulded precisely to the patient’s teeth and bite. A custom-fitted mouthguard provides:

  • A secure and comfortable fit
  • Even distribution of impact forces
  • Greater durability and stability
  • Clearer speech and easier breathing compared to over-the-counter options

Custom-fitted mouthguards are recommended by dental associations for athletes of all ages.

The Process of Getting a Custom-Fitted Mouthguard

Assessment
The dentist examines the teeth, gums, and bite to confirm that a mouthguard is suitable.

Impressions or Digital Scans
A mould or scan of the teeth is taken to record their exact shape and bite position.

Laboratory Fabrication
The mouthguard is made in a dental laboratory from a durable, flexible material designed to absorb impact.

Fitting Appointment
The mouthguard is tried in the mouth to check comfort, fit, and coverage. Adjustments are made if needed.

Instructions for Use and Care
Patients receive guidance on how to wear, clean, and store the mouthguard.

A custom-fitted mouthguard is made to suit the individual’s mouth, providing a more precise fit than over-the-counter options.

Sports and Activities That Require Mouthguards

Mouthguards are particularly important in contact or collision sports. Examples include:

  • Rugby and football
  • Basketball, netball, and soccer
  • Hockey (field and ice)
  • Martial arts and boxing
  • Lacrosse and water polo
  • Skateboarding, BMX riding, and mountain biking

Even in sports with little or no physical contact, falls or accidental knocks can occur, making a mouthguard a practical way to help protect the teeth and mouth.

Mouthguards for Children and Adolescents

Preventive care plays an important role in maintaining oral health. Regular professional cleaning helps remove tartar that can build up over time, and early detection of cavities allows them to be managed before they progress further.

Preventive dental visits also help monitor your overall health. Research has shown connections between oral health and conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. While a dental check-up doesn’t replace medical care, it can help identify potential concerns early so they can be addressed appropriately.

Care and Maintenance

To keep a custom mouthguard working properly and lasting longer, regular care is important.

  • Rinse before and after use with cold water or a mild mouth rinse.
  • Clean gently with a toothbrush and mild soap. Avoid using hot water, as it can change the shape of the material.
  • Store in a ventilated container to let it dry and reduce the chance of bacteria building up.
  • Keep it away from heat, including direct sunlight or inside a parked car.
  • Check the mouthguard often for signs of wear, cracks, or changes in shape.
  • Bring it to dental appointments so it can be checked for fit and condition.

A custom-fitted mouthguard can last from one to two years, depending on how often it is used and whether the bite or teeth change over time. If it feels loose, worn, or uncomfortable, it may need to be replaced.

Common Problems with Mouthguards

Loose Fit
This can happen if the teeth move because of growth, orthodontic treatment, or general wear of the mouthguard.

Discomfort or Irritation
Damage, heat exposure, or incorrect cleaning can affect the fit and cause rubbing or irritation.

Cracks or Tears
These weaken the mouthguard and reduce its ability to provide protection.

Odour or Unpleasant Taste
This can develop when the mouthguard is not cleaned or stored properly.

If a mouthguard becomes worn, damaged, or loose, it should be replaced to help maintain proper protection and comfort.

Special Considerations

Orthodontic Patients
For patients with braces, specially adapted mouthguards can be made to fit over appliances. These help protect both teeth and orthodontic components during impact.

Night-Time Grinding (Bruxism)
Custom-fitted night guards are available for patients who grind or clench their teeth during sleep. Although they may look similar to sports mouthguards, they are made from different materials and are designed to suit night-time use. These devices help reduce tooth wear and protect existing dental work from damage caused by grinding.

Adults with Restorations
Crowns, bridges, implants, or dentures can all be protected with a custom mouthguard. The dentist will design the guard with these factors in mind.

Limitations of Mouthguards

Mouthguards help reduce the chance and severity of dental injuries, but they cannot prevent every type of impact or trauma. Their effectiveness depends on wearing them correctly and consistently during sports or other physical activities.

A mouthguard that is damaged, poorly fitted, or not cleaned properly may not work as intended. Growth, orthodontic treatment, or frequent use can also change how it fits, meaning a replacement may be needed over time. Regular checks during dental visits help ensure the mouthguard continues to fit and function properly.
