Pola At Home Whitening, teeth whitening, The Smile Collective

This professionally prescribed system allows patients to complete whitening safely at home under supervision.

Pola At-Home Whitening uses gels that act on stains within the outer layers of the teeth. The gel is placed in fitted trays made specifically for each patient. Over time, this helps change the colour of natural teeth. The process is slower than in-clinic whitening, using a milder formula for gradual results.

Only natural teeth respond to whitening. Fillings, crowns, or veneers will not change colour and may appear a different shade after treatment.

Who May Be Suitable

Pola At-Home Whitening may be considered for patients who:

  • Have healthy teeth and gums
  • Have staining from foods, drinks, or natural ageing
  • Prefer gradual whitening under supervision
  • Can follow instructions carefully

It may not be suitable for patients who:

  • Have untreated tooth decay, gum disease, or damaged enamel
  • Have restorations on front teeth that would not change colour
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Experience frequent or significant tooth sensitivity

Before starting, an examination is carried out to confirm whether the procedure is appropriate and safe. Suitability, expected changes, and care instructions are discussed in advance.

The Process Step by Step

Consultation and Examination
The process begins with a check of teeth and gums. The dental team records the current shade and ensures there are no untreated problems.

Impressions or Scans
If suitable, impressions or digital scans are taken to make thin, clear trays that fit securely over the teeth.

Tray Fabrication and Fitting
The trays are created in a dental laboratory. When ready, their fit is checked to ensure comfort and accuracy. A secure fit helps prevent gel leakage and allows even coverage.

Selecting the Whitening System
Two Pola options are available:

  • Pola Day: Worn for short sessions, typically 15–45 minutes per use.
  • Pola Night: Worn for longer periods, from a few hours up to overnight.

The recommended system and wear time depend on tooth sensitivity, lifestyle, and timing preferences.

Instructions for Use
At the fitting appointment, clear directions are given on how to place the gel in the trays, how long to wear them, and how to clean and store both trays and gel. Only a very small amount of gel is used for each tooth.

At-Home Whitening
The treatment is completed at home over one to two weeks, following the instructions provided. The process is gradual, and progress may be checked during the course of treatment. Adjustments can be made if needed.

Review and Follow-Up

After the course is finished, a review appointment is scheduled to compare the colour before and after treatment, discuss sensitivity if it occurred, and provide ongoing care advice.

What to Expect During Treatment

During Pola At-Home Whitening, patients may notice temporary sensitivity to hot or cold foods.

If this occurs, the wear time can be reduced, or the treatment can be paused for a short period before continuing.

Avoid using too much gel, as this can irritate the gums. If it happens, remove the trays, clean your mouth with water, and resume the next day. Eating, drinking, or smoking should be avoided while wearing the trays. After each session, rinse the trays with cool water and store them in their case away from heat and sunlight.

Aftercare and Ongoing Care

After whitening, gentle care helps protect the teeth and reduce sensitivity. Patients are advised to:

  • Rinse with water after each session and avoid very hot, cold, or acidic foods for a few hours.
  • Avoid strongly coloured food and drinks, such as coffee, tea, and red wine, for at least two days after whitening.
  • Brush gently with a soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.
  • Avoid abrasive toothpaste that may wear enamel.
  • Store whitening products in a cool, dry place as directed.
  • If sensitivity occurs, use a toothpaste formulated for sensitive teeth and pause whitening for a short period.

How Long the Effect Lasts

Whitening is not permanent. The colour of teeth may gradually change over time due to diet, lifestyle, and ageing. Factors that can influence how long results last include:

  • Frequency of consuming stain-causing food and drinks
  • Tobacco use
  • Oral hygiene habits
  • Natural tooth structure and enamel thickness

For some patients, the effect may last several months to a year. The procedure can be repeated occasionally, under professional supervision, if further colour adjustment is needed.

Risks and Limitations

Pola At-Home Whitening should be carried out under professional supervision, and it is important to be aware of possible side effects and limitations:

  • Temporary sensitivity may occur, especially early in treatment.
  • Mild gum irritation may happen if the gel touches soft tissue.
  • Teeth with restorations may not respond evenly.
  • Overuse or unsupervised application may damage enamel or increase sensitivity.
  • Results vary depending on tooth condition and stain type.

Following instructions carefully and attending review visits helps manage these risks. Regular communication with the dental team also allows any concerns or side effects to be addressed early.

Differences Between At-Home and In-Chair Whitening

Pola At-Home Whitening and in-clinic whitening work differently. At-home whitening uses a gentler gel applied over a longer period using fitted trays. The gradual process allows flexibility and closer control by the patient.

In-chair whitening, such as Zoom, is carried out entirely in the clinic. A stronger gel is applied and may be assisted by a light. The procedure is completed in one visit, but can cause temporary sensitivity.

Some patients use both systems — completing in-chair whitening first, then using Pola trays occasionally to help manage changes in tooth colour over time. Both methods are professionally prescribed and monitored to ensure safety and control.
